11.01. Ball and Paddle
Ball and Paddle games have the player move along a fixed axis to bounce an object away from entering their field.
This subgenre is most commonly associated with Pong (Atari, 1972) and its innumerable clones at the time. However, occasional arcade releases built on the formula through the 1990s.
Battle Flip Shot (Visco, 1998)
The subgenre saw some resurgence in popularity due to sustained competitive interest in Windjammers (Data East, 1994), which even received a modern sequel in 2022. Ball and Paddle mechanics may also commonly be found in the Sports Compilation subgenre in the form of Air Hockey or similar activities.
Notably, Ball and Paddle games were also responsible for the Block Breaker subgenre. Clean Sweep (Ramtek, 1974), and later Breakout (Atari, 1976), flipped the player axis on its side and removed multiplayer to shift the gameplay objective away from competition.
